It is one of the most extended varieties in Spain. It is thought that it comes from the basin of the river Ebro, although some experts place its origins in the Valencia area. It is the base grape for the elaboration of white Riojas and Cavas. It is slow to bud; it resists frost and drought, but is sensitive to diseases. It is highly productive. Bunches are big and compact. The berries are round, big, golden colour and of fine skin. The wines are of good quality, light yellow-straw coloured with shades of green; On the nose they are intense, with fruity aromas; in the mouth they are thin, fruity, elegant, balanced in relation to acidity and slightly bitter. They have a low alcoholic richness, which ranges between 9 and 10.5 degrees. It gives very good results when fermented in cask and elaborates generous wines. |
