GarnatxaThe garnatxa is possibly the variety with more pedigree of all the traditional wines, as it makes a very elegant wine, not too acidic, aromatic and of high alcoholic grading if cultivated in accordance with its demands. But the wine has little colour, a fact that can be inconvenient for a good red wine. Although it is also true that currently, wine is valued more as a global concept than as by determinant factor like colour. Apart from which, more coloured wines have to be achieved to identify better the concept of red wine. There is even a mixing of varieties such as the garnatxa tintorera to contribute colour. The granatxa wine, in any case, oxidises easily, a matter that is considered a defect. The garnatxa is cultivated throughout Cataluña, especially in poorer soils, where this variety gives maximum quality. .

From an agronomic point of view, when flowering, it is very sensitive to humidity and spring fog. This may cause loss of production, a matter that will have to be considered to avoid planting it in areas where these kinds of accidents can happen. It is also very sensitive to grey mould, so it has to be placed in sunny and airy areas. .

The garnatxa variety was cultivated throughout Cataluña, especially in poor soils, where it gives maximum quality. It is also basic in Cariñena and in la Rioja. From an agronomic point of view, when flowering, it is very sensitive to humidity and spring fog. As it can affect the crop, this matter must be considered to avoid planting it in areas where these kinds of accidents can happen and cause a blossom drop. It is also very sensitive to grey mould, so it has to be placed in sunny and airy areas in order to achieve the grape?s maximum health. It also doesn?t want to be placed on areas that are too high. It likes soils that are placed in climate regions III-IV-V, from the sea to the foot of the mountain. This variety can improve if cultivated in suitable areas and grafted on week rootstocks like 41-B, 420 A and 110-R in dryer soils. Pruning must be short, and it is advisable to bud the vine shoots when it starts to flower.
